SEA OKs Steelers to study additional seats at Heinz Field

The Pittsburgh Steelers are moving forward with a proposal to add 3,000 seats to Heinz Field.

The Sports and Exhibition Authority's board of directors today authorized the team to study the "scope, design, timing and funding" of the addition.

The SEA owns the North Shore stadium, where the Steelers and University of Pittsburgh Panthers play football.

The authority granted PSSI Corp., a Steelers subsidiary that operates the stadium, permission to approach NFL officials for approval to increase the stadium's capacity and market personal seat licenses to fans.

The stadium now has a capacity of over 65,000 during football games.

The NFL could consider the request at a meeting in May. The team has been examining a possible expansion since 2010.

"When the building was designed it was designed with the opportunity to add seats under the scoreboard," said Mary Conturo, the authority's executive director.
