Price for RG3 may be on the rise

The buzz for Robert Griffin III at the NFL scouting combine was off the charts this weekend as the former Baylor quarterback wowed teams and the news media with his electric personality before sizzling on Sunday by clocking 4.41 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

Now the price to get the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner might also jump off the chart.

With the Colts likely taking Stanford's Andrew Luck with the No. 1 pick overall in the draft on April 26, competition for the right to select "RGIII" is heating up as the Rams shop the No. 2 pick.

Never mind that Griffin and Luck didn't throw during quarterback drills.

"What happens with Griffin sets the tone for a lot of things in the draft," said CBS analyst Pat Kirwan, a former team executive. "There are just enough candidates looking at that No. 2 spot. They all know it's for sale. "

The Rams are committed to QB Sam Bradford, drafted No. 1 overall in 2010, meaning conditions are ripe for the Browns (fourth and 22nd overall) and Redskins (sixth) to be among the teams potentially making a play for Griffin, whose 40 time was the third fastest by a quarterback since 2000, according to the NFL Network.

The Seahawks and Dolphins might also be in the mix, pending free agency moves.

And surprises always lurk.

"You never know what's going to happen," said Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel, currently positioned in the 11th slot.

Former Redskins executive VP of football operations Vinny Cerrato suspects a steep price. Based on the draft trade value chart used by teams, the Redskins might have to deal first-, second- and third-round picks this year, plus a first-round picks in 2013, for the Rams' No. 1.

"If you're going by the chart, it's a lot," Cerrato said. "But it's supply and demand. Sometimes, the chart doesn't matter, depending on what trades are going for in any given year. It's a starting point. But whenever a quarterback is involved, that value is off the charts."

A deal for the No. 2 slot likely wouldn't come for weeks, given free agency's looming arrival March 13.

But Kirwan expects Redskins GM Bruce Allen and HC Mike Shanahan to be aggressive.

"They have to do something," Kirwan said. "They have (Tony) Romo, Eli (Manning) and Michael (Vick) in their division. They're so far out of it, they can't ever win, the way they are now at quarterback."
