Countdown to Super Bowl XLVI: Cancer survivor Herzlich completes journey with Giants - Ingles

Of all the Giants who stepped foot yesterday in the host city for Super Bowl XLVI no one took a more arduous or courageous journey than Mark Herzlich. The rookie linebacker is a cancer survivor, having been diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma (a rare form of bone cancer) and missed the entire 2009 season at Boston College battling the disease.

The difficult recovery cost Herzlich a shot at getting selected in the 2011 NFL Draft before the Giants signed him as a free agent. After a rookie season watching, learning, playing on special teams, making two starts at middle linebacker and dealing with a high ankle sprain, Herzlich has made it to Super Bowl XLVI, where the Giants play the Patriots on Sunday.

Not long after the Giants’ charter flight touched down, Herzlich tweeted his feelings on getting here:

“2 yrs ago I was told I might never walk again. Just WALKED off plane in Indy to play in The #SuperBowl. #TakeThatSh*tCancer.”
