Slam dunks and strip sacks, drag bunts and sharp jabs, some sprinkled with sugar and some with salt.

Reaching the NFC Championship game was, for the 49ers, a matter of perfect timing. They're "trending," which is the best way to build momentum in the 21st century. That surely helped them gain approval from NFL owners for that $200 million G-4 loan to be applied to stadium construction.

For one, winners have a way of gaining favor.

For two, NFL shot-callers got another look at Candlestick Dump, and they still hate it.

Even as the city of Santa Clara remains behind the project, the anti-stadium crowd is determined to remain a plucky opponent. This ain't over till it's over.

Many 49ers fans are weeping at the prohibitive cost of purchasing season tickets, should this stadium ever get built. That's the way of the new NFL, folks, catering to the upper crust and putting the middle class in a bind.

By the way, don't count out the Raiders. No official comment from them Thursday, but they continue to study their options, and their possibly sharing the new stadium could boost that G-4 loan.
