Luck will wear Colts horseshoe on his NFL helmet
The worst-kept secret of the 2012 NFL draft continued its leak Thursday: As anticipated, Andrew Luck soon will wear the iconic blue horseshoe on his new helmet.
Speaking to USA TODAY Sports on Stanford's campus, Luck did not contest multiple published reports that the Indianapolis Colts have told the All-America quarterback they would select him No. 1 overall in the draft next Thursday.
A person with knowledge of the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the subject, told The Indianapolis Star the Colts would select Luck. ESPN first reported the story.
"This story has been written many times over," Luck said. "I am going to keep the conversations between the Colts and myself private for now. I apologize; I'm sorry."
The rebuilding Colts released four-time league MVP Peyton Manning last month. They were 2-14 last season when he did not play after neck surgery.
Luck, 22, plans to graduate in June. He will arrive in New York City on Tuesday, before the start of the three-day draft.
Stanford coach David Shaw, who has deep ties within the NFL, expects the Colts to pick Luck.
"I would be absolutely shocked (if they don't take Luck)," said Shaw, who served as an assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Ravens over nine seasons.
"I've talked with (NFL) guys who say, 'He's it — a guy who comes around once every 10-15 years.' It's not going to be a quick fix, especially with the (players) they had walk out the door. But (Luck) is the biggest piece of the puzzle.
"You could almost understand (if they traded down for multiple draft choices). You can make that argument that it would be worth it. But not if you're talking about a once-in-a-generation football player."
