Peyton Manning sweepstakes officially underway
Peyton Manning said Wednesday that "I haven't thought about where I'll play," but that's OK because the rest of us have done very little else since it became evident that he wasn't going to continue his career as quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts.
Even as the emotional news conference announcing his release unfolded, speculation swirled as to where the coveted free agent will land. The Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets and Washington Redskins have been reported as strong potential suitors. The Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks also were considered among teams having interest.
Here's the latest view of the ever-changing landscape:
Citing persons with knowledge of the team's strategy, The Washington Post reports that the Redskins plan to aggressively pursue signing Manning and two indicated that it would not preclude the team from trying to attempt to acquire Robert Griffin III or another quarterback in the draft.
NFL.com's Jason La Canfora reports that the San Francisco 49ers have no plans to attempt to sign Manning.
The New York Post is reporting that a person with knowledge of the Jets plans says the team will monitor Manning's recovery from neck surgery before determining their level of interest in signing him.
Profootballtalk.com is reporting that an Arizona mattress company is getting in on the billboard wooing wars with a sign that urges Manning to "Please Sleep Here." Signs already had popped up in Nashville, urging that he join the Titans, and Miami.
