Saints' Sean Payton not yet scheduled to talk at NFL owners meetings

And everyone thought Tim Tebow's introductory New York Jets news conference Monday would prove to be the big media circus.

Some media and twitter reports swirled this morning that Saints HC Sean Payton arrived at 8:45 a.m. ET in an SUV with tinted windows escorted by local police through a side gate at the Breakers Hotel with Payton being whisked into Commissioner Roger Goodell's morning briefing to all 32 owners and club representatives.

A bank of New Orleans television camera crews staked out the SUV's arrival.

Turns out that Payton wasn't inside. And there is no plan for Payton, Saints GM Mickey Loomis or owner Tom Benson to meet with reporters today to discuss Goodell's unprecedented sanctions designed to punish the three-year existence of a bounty program within the team.

However if the Saints conduct a news conference to address the fallout -- the league seems to be encouraging them to do one -- it would happen Tuesday and might even reveal who will step in as interim coach once Payton's season-long suspension commences April 1.

Payton and Loomis will attend tomorrow's meeting for coaches and general managers.

But don't expect any updates today.

"Sean is on his way,'' Saints public relations director Greg Bensel said at 10:20 a.m. "He's not talking today. The earliest he'll talk is tomorrow, if he talks.''

Asked if Payton would wait to speak until the NFC's Wednesday morning coaches breakfast with reporters, Bensel said, "The league doesn't want the breakfast to turn into a circus. So if anything happens, it would be Tuesday.''

The likely candidates as Payton's fill-in are OC Pete Carmichael, Jr. and offensive line coach Aaron Kromer.
