Opening Statement:“(I am) still trying to get hydrated from yesterday. That was brutal. It was tough conditions. I was very pleased with how our team handled it. I think going out early and getting acclimated helped. The guys did a very good job of hydrating before the game and I think that was critical. Plus, the ability to rotate guys, which is a by-product of having better depth, certainly helped us in those conditions. With all of the rain that we got before the game and then the sun coming out with all the moisture in the ground, it was really tough out there.”
On how important the win was for the team:“I think anytime you win on the road, it is an important win. Especially for us in the history with being on the east coast in the one o’clock game, it was good to start out the way we did with an opening drive for a touchdown and then to sustain it through the game was big for us. Obviously, after the way we played the first week, it was something that would be good for our confidence as we go forward. It was really good for our team to get that win yesterday.”
On the offensive line’s improvement from the first game:“Well, they answered the challenge. We got on them hard last week and it was a tough week of practice for those guys. But, they stepped up. It is a unit that I thought played well in training camp and in the preseason. They did not play that well in the first game. What you would like to see is them respond the way they did. They certainly have their hands full this week. Hopefully, we can continue to play at that level.”

Week 3, 2009, 09/21/2009
BILL BELICHICKWell, I don’t think a lot of things have changed since we talked yesterday afternoon. Just overall we need to do a lot of things better than we did yesterday down in Giants Stadium: coaching, playing, offense, defense, special teams, big guys, skilled guys, you name it. [There are] too many little things that need to be better. [We are] just not doing things as well as we need to do them; in a close division game like that, that ends up being the difference. They did them better than we did and I think the results speak for themselves.
What did you see from Joey Galloway?BILL BELICHICKI think overall in the passing game we’ve got to do a better job of throwing the ball, getting open, catching it, protecting and all the things that are involved in the passing game that includes everybody. We made some plays, but we didn’t make enough of them. I’d say the same thing about Joey and all the rest of the receivers and everybody involved. Really, you can say the same thing about everybody on that team. Some things were good. Some things could have been better. Overall, we need to get better. There’s no other way to put it.

On getting reps with the ones:“It felt great. That’s the first time in a long time I’ve gotten to do that. I did it once last year, but just the thought of coming back tomorrow and getting more comfortable with everybody, it’s a good feeling. You get to run the huddle the way you want to and, all of those things that have been running through my head for two years, trying not to change too much because you want the same continuity, but you want put your own little twist on things. We’re looking forward to it. It was a great feeling.”
On adding his own twists to the offense:“Just tempo and using the cadence a certain way, the guys getting used to the way that you call plays—maybe it’s faster or slower—everything is different. The guys did a great job of receiving it today as far as it probably being a little bit different and that’s just a tribute to the type of guys we have and the type of guys [head coach] Andy [Reid] always brings in.”
On whether cadence will be the biggest factor in regard to the offensive line adjusting to him as a quarterback:“Yeah, I mean obviously as you guy know it’s an issue already because we’ve had so many false starts in the preseason and this last game. So without me being thrown in the fire it was still an issue and obviously it increases whenever I come in there. That’s a point of emphasis this week. We’ll get it hashed out though, it won’t be a problem and we’ll be at home so noise probably won’t be a problem, and we can get rolling and keep those drives going.”

You mentioned on Sunday that they played that deep cover-2. What percentage of the time do those defenses play that coverage against you?“Quite a bit. It’s a coverage we’re used to seeing with Chad (Ochocinco). It’s a coverage that Larry Fitzgerald, Chad (Ochocinco), T.O. and Calvin Johnson see typically a good majority of the time.”
In that coverage, you probably want to hit the underneath stuff and have those safeties come up, right?“In a perfect world, you just run the ball at that side. But the defense also understands that it’s a weakness of the defense, too. They try to do different stunts and schemes to try to slow you down that way. The best thing to do is, if you’re not running the ball, to get the ball to other guys to make them come out of a double coverage situation to worry about other offensive players. If it’s your tight end, your slot receiver, your strong-side receiver, try to get the ball and spread the ball around a little bit more and make them play a little more true to the rest of the receivers and not so much focus the defense around Chad (Ochocinco)”.

Opening Comments:“The crowd yesterday was really outstanding. I thought they did a great job and had a real effect on the game. It was great to see. Unfortunately, we didn’t get it finished off so they could go home and enjoy it. Hats off to them. Our players noticed it and commented on it. It obviously has an effect. You only get eight home-field games to begin with, and we let one get away. They were outstanding as a group yesterday. Very loud and vocal. It has an effect on the other team’s offense. I know we know about it when we play on the road a lot of times. We spend a lot of time practicing with noise when we’re on offense, because of the concentration level you’ve got to have. Even at midfield, I noticed, (Denver) nearly got a delay of game.
“I think we came out of the game pretty healthy. We may have lost Nate Livings with a knee. I don’t know if we’ll have his services this week. Brian Leonard was the other guy that got banged up in the game, but Brian should be fine. It happened toward the end when we were moving the ball down there on them. He was able to stay in, I think, for one more play before we were able to get him out. David Jones should be working his way back as he expands his rehab and gets back more into the on-field stuff. Carson seemed to come through the game well. I’m sure he was sore today.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2009HEAD COACH RAHEEM MORRISOpening statement:“Today we started on some Buffalo preparation. They are a good team, a lot of good players. They are kind of like us a little bit. They have some talent on their team; everyone kind of underrates them a little bit. They went out Monday, put up a really good performance. I know you don’t get any moral victories in this league, I know they felt the same way we do. Whenever you lose a game, whatever the score was, it doesn’t matter how close you were, you lose a game. None of that stuff matters, but they are a really good team, a really well coached team, I have a lot of respect for Dick Jauron. Roster moves, you guys already know about Sean Mahan back. We are still looking for the best 53. We have a bunch of guys in here that are working out for us. Injuries, E.J. Biggers is still out, he did not participate today. Antonio Bryant was limited today. Jeff Faine today is out. He obviously did not participate. Kyle Moore did not participate and John Gilmore was limited with his back today. We are getting a little healthy, we lost a couple. Not bad for your first week.”
On whom the starting center would be this week:“Well, of course we didn’t rep Faine. Obviously it won’t be Faine so we repped Mahan today and we repped Compas. Those two will be working at those positions, I don’t want to help Buffalo out too much but we’ll get one of those guys more than likely.”

On both teams coming off a loss but knowing there is still 15 games left in the season:“Honestly, it was a close and tough game for us. We saw some great things. We don’t take anything as moral victories, we lost, we weren’t good enough that day. We saw some things that we definitely can improve on. We saw some great things and sometimes you have to make a play. There was some times when plays were open that we just didn’t capitalize on. As an offense that is what you have to do to score points. Especially playing against the Colts and now Arizona with the high powered offenses. We have to be able to score points. Granted the Cardinals defense does a great job of causing confusion, so we have to be on the same page. That is the thing, us being on the same page and working things out as a unit.”
On what he sees from the Cardinals defense:“Everybody’s quick and they have great athletes out there. That is the tough thing about facing a three-four team, is the athletes they have. The two inside backers are very athletic, always around the ball, leading tacklers from last game. So there is definitely some things we have to look out for but we are going to do our game plan, our scheme and we are going to execute to the best of our ability.”

On how hard it is to prepare for the Cardinals, especially since they only play once every four or five years:“Obviously, we got to see them play in the Super Bowl last year. We have been hard at work getting prepared for them. They are not an opponent we play all the time. We are doing our best to study them and learn what they like to do and who they like to do it with. We understand that they have a lot of talent. They have eight Pro Bowlers on the squad. It is a very strong football team. We are getting ready to do well in our home opener.”
On if he agrees with Cardinals Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt’s assessment that team’s get off to a slow start in week one because you haven’t seen much film from the other team:“I think both of us experienced a weekend last week that did not go the way we wanted. From that standpoint, we would like to be a week better and find a way to get a victory this week.”

On the injury status of DE Kenny Iwebema:“We are still waiting to find out about Kenny’s ankle. It is probably going to be at least this week. The only thing we are concerned with is if it’s a potential high ankle sprain, which we don’t know. We are waiting for the MRI results now. He fell on it and twisted it. Hopefully, it won’t be that bad.”
On the injury status of S Matt Ware:“It is the same thing he had in the preseason game, a stinger. He has strength back in it today. We did the MRI and the results showed that. I think we are positive. I think now it is just a question of getting his strength back and being able to go. That will be something that will be determined as we progress this week.”

Some have been reappointed. Others are new this year. They are all proud to be NFL captains.
In the third year of an NFL program that promotes the importance of team leadership through the role of captains, 25 teams have appointed season-long captains on offense, defense and special teams for 2009.
“It is always an honor to be chosen as a captain,” says Arizona Cardinals quarterback KURT WARNER, who was selected as a captain for the second consecutive season. “It means even more when you’re voted to be a captain by the guys in the locker room because they respect what you do, how you go about your job and they believe that you’re a guy that solicits respect from everyone in that locker room. It’s always a tremendous honor to be chosen in that manner and I will do my best to live up to that.”
Captains traditionally serve as a link between players, coaches and management to help foster cohesion within teams.
“I’ve been on teams with a lot of great captains,” says Cleveland Browns running back JAMAL LEWIS, who was named a captain for the first time this year. “It plays a major role in where you’re trying to go as a team.”

Teams Give Back To Community On Their ‘Day Off’
As the NFL season kicks off, teams across the league will continue the tradition of ‘NFL Community Tuesdays,’ where players spend their only day off getting active in their communities. From school visits to fitness activities, food drives to literacy events, players, coaches, and executives will spend their Tuesdays throughout the season helping those in need, and thanking fans for their support.
“Our players recognize the importance of community service,” said Commissioner ROGER GOODELL. “From our PLAY 60 youth fitness campaign to our longtime partnership with the United Way, we support our fans throughout the season and beyond. We applaud our players and teams for doing their part to improve their communities on a weekly basis.”

NFL KICKOFF 2009
RESILIENT FAVRE:Minnesota quarterback BRETT FAVRE started his 270th consecutive game in the Vikings’ 34-20 win over the Cleveland Browns, tying JIM MARSHALL for the longest starting streak in NFL history. Marshall started 270 games in a row for Minnesota from 1961-1979. He played 12 games with Cleveland in 1960, but official records of starters were not kept before 1961. However, the Browns’ internal records – including highlight films, score sheets, game-day programs, newspaper clips and conversations with former players – indicate that Marshall started the first game in 1960, but did not start the final 11 games of that season while playing a significant back-up role.
A look at the longest starting streaks on record, as published in team media guides:
PLAYER/TEAMS - YEARS - CONSECUTIVE STARTS
Jim Marshall, Vikings - 1961-1979 - 270
Brett Favre, Packers, Jets, Vikings - 1992-Present - 270
Mick Tingelhoff, Vikings - 1962-1978 - 240
Bruce Matthews, Oilers/Titans - 1987-2001 - 229

Gonzalez became the first tight end in NFL history – and the 21st player overall – to reach 11,000 career receiving yards (11,013).
As the NFL season kicks off, quarterbacks will be in the spotlight…whether it’s start No. 1 or 270!
Rookie quarterbacks MARK SANCHEZ of the New York Jets and MATTHEW STAFFORD of the Detroit Lions will make their first NFL starts this Sunday.
Meanwhile, Minnesota Vikings veteran quarterback BRETT FAVRE will start at QB for the 270th consecutive game, believed to be tied for the longest starting streak in NFL history with JIM MARSHALL. (Marshall started 270 games in a row for Minnesota from 1961-79. He played 12 games with Cleveland in 1960, but official records of starters were not kept before 1961. However, the Browns’ internal records indicate that Marshall did not start the final 11 games of that season).

Hundreds of players were cut from NFL teams Saturday. This article was written by Bill Bradley and appeared in the Sacramento Bee.
Yet, for the first time in decades, many of them will have a shot at playing fall football somewhere other than the NFL.
These castoffs will be eyed closely by the four teams in the United Football League, which opens play this fall. While many of us are unsure what to make of this new four-team, six-game league, it presents a new opportunity for these players.

The Washington Redskins notified a Fairfax County woman Friday that the team plans to ask a court to vacate a $66,364 court judgment against her after she defaulted on a multiyear contract for season club tickets.
A real-estate agent, Pat Hill, 72, had signed a $5,300-a-year, 10-year contract through 2017 for two seats at FedEx Field, but was unable to make payments in 2008 after the housing market crashed. The Redskins sued Hill in October for the duration of the contract and won a default judgment in March.
She was one of 125 people and firms who had been sued by the Redskins in the past five years after they defaulted on multiyear contracts to purchase premium seats.
Redskins General Counsel David Donovan wrote to Hill in an e-mail Friday afternoon: "I have directed our outside counsel to notify the courts that your obligation to the Redskins has been satisfied and to vacate the judgment against you. That means you no longer owe the Redskins anything, and you are released from all of your contractual obligations."

Before the Internet and cell phones and TV packages that let you watch every pro football game, playing fantasy football took a lot of work. It sounded geeky – football fans who were so hard-core that they selected individual NFL players to be on their “team,” then figured out if they won by scouring USA Today box scores for player statistics on Monday mornings.
Today, though, as football season kicks into high gear, fantasy football has become mainstream. From its small roots in the 1980s, it has now played by an estimated 20 million people in North America, making it easily the most popular fantasy sport.

It’s the final week of the preseason and young players around the league know this is their time to shine.
With final NFL roster cuts to 53 players this Saturday, this week’s games are a last chance for many players to make their team’s roster. The starters are basically set throughout the league as are the key backup positions. It’s the “bubble” players who are out to impress.
“The young guys in the NFL, they know this is their game,” says ESPN analyst and former NFL head coach HERM EDWARDS. “It’s real important for a young player and a rookie trying to make a team.”
Pittsburgh linebacker JAMES HARRISON, a two-time All-Star who helped the Steelers win Super Bowl XLIII with a 100-yard interception-return touchdown, understands the importance of the fourth preseason game. The 2008 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year entered the league as an undrafted free agent and made the most of his opportunity.
“For guys like me, who come into the league undrafted,” says Harrison, “the third and fourth preseason games are when you have the opportunity to show what you can do.”
The final preseason week features three national TV games:
PHILADELPHIA at NEW YORK JETS
(Thursday, NFLN, 7:00 PM ET): Last week, first-year head coach REX RYAN got his first victory as the Jets defeated the Giants 27-25. Leading the way was rookie starting quarterback MARK SANCHEZ, the fifth overall selection in the 2009 NFL Draft.
Sanchez completed 13 of 20 passes (65.0 percent) for 149 yards and one touchdown as the rookie put up 20 points in two-and-a-half quarters of play.
“Once you’re named the starter, there’s a little bit of confidence that comes with that,” says Sanchez. “Your head coach trusts you. Naming me the starter allows me to be a leader.”
His head coach was pleased with Sanchez’s play and is confident with his team moving forward.
“The kid played great,” Ryan said after the game. “He is what we thought he was.”
Facing the Jets this week is another NFC East opponent – the Philadelphia Eagles. For the Eagles, this game will mark the team’s first trip to the Meadowlands since upsetting the Giants in an NFC Divisional Playoff game last year.
Philadelphia quarterback DONOVAN MC NABB passed for 244 yards and a touchdown last week as the team defeated Jacksonville 33-32. The game also featured the Eagles debut of quarterback MICHAEL VICK, who was on the field for six plays and was used in various formations.
The team has also added a couple of playmaking rookies in wide receiver JEREMY MACLIN (first round) and running back LE SEAN MC COY (second round).
OAKLAND at SEATTLE
(Thursday, NFLN, 10:00 PM ET): Rookie head coach TOM CABLE of Oakland will face Seattle first-year head coach JIM MORA in this Thursday-night showdown.
For the Raiders, quarterback JA MARCUS RUSSELL will get a final tune-up before starting in Week 1 against San Diego.
“We’re very fortunate he’s getting better,” says Cable. “He’s progressing the way you want him to. He’s not perfect yet, but he’s the quarterback of the Oakland Raiders.”
The Seahawks recently signed veteran running back EDGERRIN JAMES but quarterback MATT HASSELBECK stole the show in the team’s 14-10 win over Kansas City. Hasselbeck threw for 216 yards and two touchdowns, including one to prized free agent wide receiver T.J. HOUSHMANDZADEH.
“Matt was sharp,” says Mora. “It is good to see the timing between him and the guys is coming along.
DALLAS at MINNESOTA
(Friday, NFLN, 8:00 PM ET): Two teams with Super Bowl aspirations will meet on Friday night, marking the fourth consecutive year that Dallas and Minnesota will play in their preseason finale.
Last week, the running back trio “Smash, Dash and Tash” – MARION BARBER, FELIX JONES and TASHARD CHOICE – combined for 125 rushing yards.
“We want to carry this on through the regular season,” says Jones. “We are just going to continue to run hard and get better.”
Head coach WADE PHILLIPS was pleased with the starters on offense, including his three running backs.
“Our offense looks strong,” says Phillips. “It looks like we can really run the ball and also throw it. I feel good about where we are right now.”
Minnesota’s offense also looked good in the Vikings’ 17-10 win at Houston Monday night.
Playing in his home state of Texas, Pro Bowl running back ADRIAN PETERSON rushed for 117 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage.
“The guys up front did a great job,” says Peterson. “You have to give them the credit.”
Veteran quarterback BRETT FAVRE completed 13 of 18 passes (72.2 percent) for 142 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown to running back CHESTER TAYLOR.
“Brett did some really good things as far as putting the ball where it needed to be,” says Childress. “He made a couple of nice plays with his feet and he had enough of a pocket presence to move around when he had to and still get the football where it needed to be.”
PRESEASON CLOSE GAMES:
This preseason, 32 of the 49 (65.3 percent) games played have been decided by one score (eight points or less). That is the highest percentage through the first three weeks of the preseason since 2005 (33 of 50, 66.0 percent).
With the NFL regular season rapidly approaching, rookies from the highly touted to the previously unknown will be called upon to play key roles in their NFL debut seasons.
“As a rookie, you want to come in and learn as much as you can,” says Detroit Lions quarterback MATTHEW STAFFORD, the first overall selection in the 2009 NFL Draft. “You find out what it is like to be a professional both on and off the field. You try to study and give yourself a chance to be competitive so you can show what you can do on the field.”
Last year, several rookies made a major impact on their teams.
Quarterbacks MATT RYAN of Atlanta and JOE FLACCO of Baltimore became the first rookie QB duo in the Super Bowl era to start all 16 games and guide their teams to the playoffs. Ryan, who was named the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, led the Falcons to an 11-5 mark, while Flacco and the Ravens advanced to the AFC Championship Game.
On the ground, running backs STEVE SLATON of Houston (1,282 yards), MATT FORTÉ of Chicago (1,238) and CHRIS JOHNSON of Tennessee (1,228) became the first rookie running back trio to each rush for at least 1,200 yards.
Those were among the rookie standouts of 2008. Here are current rookies who have made their mark already and are eager to continue their production in the regular season:
49ERS OFFENSE GETS JOLT FROM COFFEE:
San Francisco 49ers running back GLEN COFFEE, the club’s third-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, has been one of the most impressive rookies so far.
“I’m very excited about what I’ve seen from him,” says head coach MIKE SINGLETARY. “Glen’s a tough runner and he’s going to be a great addition to our football team. He really adds a lot to what we’re trying to do.”
Coffee, who leads the NFL with 230 rushing yards in the preseason, will complement veteran FRANK GORE in the 49ers’ backfield.
“He’s doing a great job,” says Gore. “He runs strong and finds the holes. Glen is going to be a great player.”
The rookie from Alabama has relied on advice from Gore, who set a franchise record with 1,695 rushing yards in 2006 en route to the Pro Bowl.
“I take the game seriously,” says Coffee. “Frank and I have similar approaches and I try to learn from him. He knows what it takes.”
49ers offensive coordinator JIMMY RAYE likes what he sees from the rookie and is excited about what he will bring to the team.
“He has been really exceptional for a rookie running back,” says Raye. “He’s way ahead of the curve in terms of pass protection and that’s unusual for a college back. He’s a rugged player, he’s mentally tough and he plays physical football. He has vision and the ability to get fast in the hole. He has a bright future.”
SANCHEZ WINS STARTING JOB:
The New York Jets envisioned MARK SANCHEZ as the club’s future starting quarterback after trading up and selecting him with the No. 5 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.
Rookie head coach REX RYAN decided the future is now for the 22-year-old, naming Sanchez the Jets’ starting quarterback on August 26.
“It takes a person with a certain confidence to play in New York,” says Ryan. “I don’t think he’s afraid of the big stage at all.”
Sanchez will become the first Jets rookie quarterback to start on the “big stage” since MATT ROBINSON in 1977. The California native says that his promotion has already boosted his morale.
“You get a little more confidence when you know your coach believes in you and has named you the starter,” says Sanchez. “Once you’re the guy, you’re the guy. You talk a little different. You walk a little different. You act a little different. That kind of feeling really helps when you’re on the field. It just helps your confidence.”
Sanchez’s poise and resolve has also won over his teammates.
“We believe in him, everybody does,” says starting safety KERRY RHODES. “The coaching staff believes in him. They made the decision. The players are behind him as well. We think we have something special with him. He has to go out and get it done on Sundays but from what we see, we have a lot of confidence in him.”
ORAKPO MAKING MOST OF POSITION SWITCH:
When the Washington Redskins drafted BRIAN ORAKPO in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft, the team knew it was getting an impact player on defense. The Redskins also saw a player that could play both defensive end, his position in college, and linebacker.
“We tried Brian at linebacker during minicamp to see if he could handle it,” says VINNY CERRATO, the team’s executive vice president of football operations. “Defensive coordinator GREG BLACHE was shocked at how easily he picked things up and how smooth the transition was.”
Orakpo has worked hard to adjust to his new position and wants to help the team in any way he can.
“With all the veterans, experience and talent we have on the defensive side of the ball,” says Orakpo, “this is a chance to keep me on the field as much as possible. This gives me a chance to use my versatility.”
So far throughout the preseason, the No. 13 overall pick has gotten more comfortable in the team’s defensive schemes.
“I feel good,” Orakpo says. “I’m getting much more comfortable to the positions they have me at.”
Two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle ALBERT HAYNESWORTH, who signed with Washington as a free agent, has taken notice of his rookie teammate.
“Brian creates great pressure,” says Haynesworth. “He seems to be all over the field making plays. He’s a great young talent.”
COOK IS HEATING UP:
At 6-5, 246 pounds, Titans rookie tight end JARED COOK has quarterback KERRY COLLINS excited about the versatility that he can bring to the Titans’ passing attack this season.
A third-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft from South Carolina, Cook aims to use his size and athletic ability to create mismatches against linebackers and safeties.
“He definitely has the potential to help us,” says Collins. “He is a big guy who can run, and he’s fast enough to get behind people. We put him outside at wide receiver sometimes, and he’s holding his own against cornerbacks. I think he’s one of those guys we can use a lot of ways and create match-up problems and help stretch defenses.”
Cook has been quick to display his receiving skills this preseason. The Georgia native leads the NFL with 17 receptions and ranks sixth with 159 receiving yards.
“I just take everything with a grain of salt, and try to learn as much as you can and just want it,” says Cook.
In an effort to speed up that learning curve, Cook has turned to veteran tight end ALGE CRUMPLER, who enters his second season with the Titans and ninth in the NFL.
“Crump is like a coach. Crump has been around the league for a long time,” says Cook. “He has a lot of wisdom to share. Every time I come off, he’ll tell me the little things that I need to correct, which is very helpful in the meeting rooms when we’re watching the film. It’s just great to have somebody like that around.”
THE REAL MC COY:
The Philadelphia Eagles selected running back LE SEAN MC COY in the second round of this year’s draft to team with two-time All-Star BRIAN WESTBROOK.
“I can learn from Brian,” says McCoy, who has rushed for a team-high 90 yards this preseason. “I see the way he plays and that will make me a better player. It’s a challenge to come here and play well and help the team. If I’m going to model my game after somebody, I don’t mind modeling my game after Brian’s.”
McCoy, who is not only a skillful runner but also an adept pass catcher out of the backfield, has impressed teammates and coaches alike. He leads all NFL rookies RBs with 10 receptions in the preseason.
“When we drafted him,” says Eagles offensive coordinator MARTY MORNHINWEG, “we knew he was an excellent receiver. We believe that he could play a receiver spot in this league. He’s an exceptional receiver.
“LeSean is doing a terrific job,” continues Mornhinweg. “We ask an awful lot out of the halfback spot in our offense and he’s picked things up very well. I’ve been impressed with LeSean.”
HOOD MAKING EARLY CONTRIBUTIONS:
ZIGGY HOOD’s transition with the Steelers from a defensive tackle in a 4-3 defense at Missouri to a defensive end in DICK LE BEAU’s complex 3-4 system has been a success so far this preseason for the defending Super Bowl champs.
The 6-3, 300-pound rookie is tied for second in the NFL with three sacks this preseason and has impressed mentor and teammate AARON SMITH with his ability to use his hands to shed blocks and run to the ball.
“He’s ahead of anybody I’ve seen coming in,” says Smith, who enters his 11th season. “He's a talented kid. He’s a smart kid. He understands it more than the rest of us did as a rookie. I would have cut me my rookie year. ”
Selected No. 32 overall in the 2009 NFL Draft, Hood is the first defensive lineman taken in the first round by Pittsburgh since nose tackle CASEY HAMPTON in 2001 and is the first defensive end selected in the first round by the Steelers since AARON JONES in 1988.
“There's a reason he’s a first-rounder,” says Smith. “Usually, a first-rounder is the complete package. He’s a big, strong kid who works hard. He is the complete package. ”
